TOEFL Reading Test Day: What to Expect & Last-Minute Tips
Before Test Day
The Night Before
- • Stop studying by 8 PM. Last-minute cramming increases anxiety without improving performance. Your skills are set by now.
- • Prepare your ID and confirmation. Have your valid passport or government-issued ID and your ETS confirmation number ready.
- • Check the test center location. Confirm the address and plan your route. Add 15 minutes for unexpected delays.
- • Set two alarms. Arriving late can mean being turned away.
- • Sleep 7-8 hours. Research shows that sleep significantly affects reading comprehension and processing speed.
Test Day Morning
- • Eat a balanced breakfast. Protein and complex carbs (eggs, oatmeal, whole grain toast) provide sustained energy. Avoid heavy or sugary foods.
- • Hydrate moderately. Drink water but not excessively -- you cannot leave during the Reading section.
- • Arrive 30 minutes early. Check-in procedures take time and rushing increases anxiety.
- • Bring only what is allowed. Your ID, confirmation number, and a light snack for the break. No phones, watches, or notes inside the testing room.
At the Test Center
Here is the typical check-in process so nothing surprises you:
ID Verification
Staff will check your ID against your registration. The name must match exactly.
Security Check
You will be asked to empty pockets and may go through a metal detector. All personal items go in a locker.
Photo and Signature
A photo will be taken and a digital signature collected. This goes on your score report.
Seated at Your Station
You will be assigned a computer station with headphones and scratch paper. You may request earplugs for noise.
Noise tip: Other test-takers may start at different times, so you might hear people speaking during the Speaking section while you are reading. Use the provided headphones or request earplugs to minimize distractions.

The Reading Interface
The TOEFL 2026 Reading interface has several features you should know about before test day:
Interface Elements

- • Questions: Appear on the right side (or below) the passage. You can see one question at a time.

These reminders should be fresh in your mind as you sit down at the testing station:
The 5 Commandments of Test Day Reading
- Skim before you read. 30 seconds to map the passage saves minutes later.
- Read questions before searching for answers. Know what you need to find.
- Never spend more than 2 minutes on one question. Guess, flag, and move on.
- Never leave a question blank. A guess has a 25% chance; blank has 0%.
- Trust your first answer. Only change if you find textual evidence against it.
Quick Warm-Up (While Waiting)
- • Take 5 deep breaths (4 seconds in, 4 seconds out)
- • Mentally review your time allocation plan
- • Remind yourself: "I have practiced for this"
- • Stretch your neck and shoulders to release tension
Common Test Day Mistakes
- • Reading too fast due to adrenaline (slow down, breathe)
- • Checking the timer after every question (only check between tasks)
- • Getting flustered by a hard question (skip and return)
- • Comparing yourself to other test-takers (focus on your screen)
If You Get Stuck
Everyone gets stuck on at least one question. Here is your emergency protocol:
Step 1: Eliminate (15 seconds)
Cross out any answer choices that are clearly wrong. Usually you can eliminate at least 1-2 options immediately.
Step 2: Re-read the Relevant Section (30 seconds)
Go back to the passage and read the specific sentence(s) related to the question. Sometimes a second look reveals what you missed.
Step 3: Choose and Flag (10 seconds)
If you still cannot decide between 2 choices, pick the one that feels right, flag the question, and move on immediately.
Step 4: Return Later (if time permits)
During your review period, revisit flagged questions with fresh eyes. Sometimes the answer becomes obvious after a break.
Managing Anxiety: If you feel overwhelmed, pause for 5 seconds. Close your eyes, take one deep breath, and remind yourself that one difficult question will not determine your score. Then open your eyes and continue.
