An AI TOEFL tutor: what the software does well, and what it cannot replace
Three quite different products are sold under this phrase, and only one of them is doing anything a tutor would recognize. This page separates them, says plainly which parts of a teacher’s job transfer to software and which do not, and — because we ship a tutor portal as well as a practice product — declines to pretend the answer is "all of them".
Three products, one phrase
Before deciding whether an AI tutor is worth it, work out which of these you are being sold. The word covers all three and they are not close substitutes.
| What it is | What it actually does | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| A chat window with a persona | A general assistant told to act like a TOEFL teacher. Answers questions, explains grammar, drafts and critiques text. | It cannot deliver or hear the audio tasks, and it does not know the 2026 task set unless you paste it in. |
| A practice platform with feedback | Serves current-format tasks under timing, grades what has a key, and returns a rubric-shaped read plus a band estimate on open responses. | It responds to the response in front of it. It has no memory of your lesson last week and no view of why you keep doing the same thing. |
| A study planner | Sequences what you do next from your results — the scheduling half of a tutor’s job rather than the teaching half. | A plan is only as good as the evidence behind it, and most planners run on a fixed syllabus with a personalized label. |
The parts of the job software genuinely does well
This is not a grudging list. Several things a human tutor does are things software does better, and pretending otherwise would be as dishonest as the opposite claim.
- Volume. A tutor cannot mark thirty responses this week. Software can, and volume is most of what improves timed writing and speaking.
- Availability. Feedback at 2am on the day before the test is worth more than better feedback next Tuesday.
- Patience with the boring parts. Article errors, verb forms, word order in Build a Sentence — a person gets tired of correcting these and software does not.
- Consistency. The same mistake gets the same correction every time, which is exactly what you want while a habit is being unlearned.
- Book-keeping. What you practiced, when, and how it went, without anybody having to remember.
The 2026 format sharpens this. Speaking is now two task types across eleven items, and the writing section has three, so the amount of raw repetition a candidate needs went up rather than down.
What ETS states
The 2026 specification lists the Speaking section at 11 items and 55 raw points, with task types Listen and Repeat (7 items) and Take an Interview (4 items).
As of January 21, 2026, the TOEFL iBT Writing section consists of three task types: Build a Sentence, Write an Email, and Write for an Academic Discussion.
Reading and Listening items are machine-scored selected responses; the Write an Email, Write for an Academic Discussion, and all Speaking tasks are AI-scored constructed responses, per the specification’s item-type notes.
The specification is subject to minor revisions until the official launch.

The parts that do not transfer, stated plainly
- Knowing your history. A tutor remembers that you avoid the Academic Discussion task and have done for a month. A feedback report sees one response.
- Knowing your first language. Half of useful correction is knowing which error is a transfer error and which is carelessness, and that is a fact about you, not about the text.
- Diagnosing avoidance. The most common reason a band stalls is that the candidate keeps practicing what they are already good at. Software will happily let you.
- Accountability. Nobody is disappointed in you at 9am. For many candidates that is the entire value of a tutor.
- Judgment about the test date. Whether to sit the test now or in six weeks is a decision about your life, not your last essay.
- An official score. No practice product of any kind issues one, and none can tell you what the real engine would have given the same response.
What ETS states
ETS states that a mock-test score comes "from something called TOEFL AI Lite" and that "when you take the real test, it is scored by a different system called TOEFL AI Deep", adding that "you might see some small differences between your mock test scores and your real test scores, and that’s totally normal."
Those two names are ETS product names, quoted here as ETS’s own; no prep company, this one included, can use them. The point for this page: even ETS’s own practice number and its own real number are allowed to disagree.

What Reach120 does instead of calling itself a tutor
The product is a practice platform with a portal for the teacher, not a replacement for one. Concretely, the parts that behave most like tutoring are these — each stated with the limit it carries.
| Capability | What it does | The limit |
|---|---|---|
| Repeated-error tracking | Bayesian Knowledge Tracing across 16 modelled error types, fitted per learner, so a habit separates itself from a one-off slip. | A learner with no history is shown no patterns rather than an invented one. |
| What to do next | Thompson-sampling adaptive routing that updates from what actually worked, so two learners with the same score get different next tasks. | It runs in Writing and Listening only — Reading and Speaking use deterministic per-learner rules — and what it learns is population-level, then routed per learner from your own evidence. |
| A forward-looking band | A gradient-boosted forecast, cross-validated on held-out learners, estimating the band your next practice session is heading for. | Typical error is about half a band, so it is a study signal — not a predicted TOEFL score. |
| Explaining the number | On an open response, the 0-5 rubric estimate is a judgment an AI model makes; every mastery value, readiness figure and routing decision after it is worked out in code, and the language model only puts those into words. A narration containing a number the engines did not produce is rejected rather than shown. | An architectural fact about the wiring, not a claim that the underlying estimate is right. |
If you already have a teacher, use both
The combination that works is not subtle: the software absorbs the volume and the book-keeping, and the person spends the hour on the things only a person can do. Reach120 ships a tutor portal built for exactly that division.
- 1The tutor creates a class and shares a six-character code or a join link.
- 2Students join deliberately from their own dashboard, through a consent screen that cannot be skipped.
- 3The tutor publishes assignments — task type, instructions, due date — and reads the whole class in one queue.
- 4The lesson then starts from the responses and the repeated-error patterns, rather than from "how has your week been".
Joining a class does not change what a student pays or what plan they are on, and a student can leave one. Reach120 makes no claim on the relationship between a tutor and their students and does not market around it.
- Reach120 for tutors
The class portal in full: assignments, the one-queue class read, and what the product will not do with your roster.
- For schools and institutions
The same shape at program scale.
If you are studying alone
Most candidates are, and the honest advice is to be deliberate about the two things a tutor would have supplied: coverage and accountability. Rotate through every task type on a schedule you write down, and give yourself a fixed weekly slot rather than practicing when you feel like it.
- TOEFL Writing practice
All three 2026 writing tasks, each with a drill and a full guide.
- Listen and Repeat practice
Play a sentence, record your own, get a read against the target text.
- Take an Interview practice
The second 2026 Speaking task, with a published prompt bank.
- Reading practice
Free and uncapped, including Complete the Words.
- Listening practice
Free and uncapped, with transcripts published beside the audio.
- Free practice tests
Full four-section mocks, scored on the spot.
AI TOEFL tutors: common questions
- Can an AI tutor replace a human TOEFL teacher?
- No. It replaces the volume, the availability and the book-keeping, which is a real share of the job. It does not replace knowing your history, spotting what you avoid, diagnosing first-language transfer errors, or holding you accountable. If you can afford a teacher, the software is what makes their hour worth more.
- Is an AI TOEFL tutor good enough on its own?
- For many candidates it has to be, and it can work — provided you supply the two things it will not: coverage across every task type rather than the ones you enjoy, and a fixed schedule. The failure mode of studying alone with software is drilling your strengths, and no product will stop you.
- What is the difference between an AI tutor and an AI checker?
- A checker responds to a single response you paste in. A tutor-style product is expected to also decide what you do next and remember what happened last time. Plenty of products marketed as tutors are checkers with a chat interface; the test is whether anything changes based on your history.
- Can ChatGPT be my TOEFL tutor?
- For explanation, drafting and grammar questions it is genuinely useful. It cannot deliver the 2026 test’s audio tasks — Listen and Repeat, Take an Interview, and the Listening section — it does not know the current task set unless you paste it in, and any band it offers comes with no stated method or error.
- Will an AI tutor improve my TOEFL score?
- We will not put a number on that, and you should be wary of anyone who does. The study that would support a score-gain figure — a defined population, verified baselines and outcomes, attrition and confounding accounted for — has not been run by anyone in this category. What is defensible is narrower: more timed practice with fast, specific feedback is how timed writing and speaking get better.
- Do tutors actually use tools like this with students?
- Reach120 ships a portal for it. A tutor creates a class, shares a six-character code, publishes assignments with task types and due dates, and reads the class in one queue with the response behind every estimate visible. Students join through a consent screen and can leave, and joining changes nothing about what they pay.
- How much does an AI TOEFL tutor cost?
- The category runs from free tiers to monthly subscriptions, and the free tiers differ enormously in what they actually include — which is why the comparison page states each provider’s own published free access with the date it was read. On Reach120, Reading and Listening practice is free and uncapped, and Writing and Speaking share a free AI-scored response each day.
