TOEFL Reading practice for the 2026 format

Three task types, one adaptive section, and a bank you can practice against without paying or signing up. Start with the task type you are weakest at — every page below publishes its questions and its answers in full.

Where do the TOEFL Reading exercises and practice questions start?

Immediately below. The TOEFL reading exercises on this page are the three 2026 task types — Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life and Read an Academic Passage — each with its own page of published passages, and each opening at the passage itself.

TOEFL practice reading questions print with their keyed answers and the reasoning behind each option, in the page itself rather than behind a signup.

For a TOEFL reading mock test rather than a single drill, the numbered practice tests put published passages, questions and keys together as whole tests.

The three 2026 Reading task types

Each task type is a different reading behaviour, and they fail for different reasons. Practice them separately before you practice them mixed.

The drill grades against a keyed answer and explains every option. No signup, and no daily limit on Reading.

What the 2026 Reading section contains

What ETS states

  • The 2026 specification lists the Reading section at 50 items and 35 raw points, with task types Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, and Read an Academic Passage.

These are published blueprint values, which the specification states are subject to minor revisions until the official launch. The item count includes non-scored items, so items do not equal raw points — the specification lists a maximum of 1 point per scored item.

  • The specification lists an estimated Reading time of an 18–21 minute router plus a 9 minute module, in a two-stage router-plus-module adaptive design.

The times are estimated. Reading prints a single 9 minute module for both routes, unlike Listening, which prints two discrete module lengths.

  • Reading items are machine-scored selected responses, evaluated by rule-based algorithms per the specification’s item-type notes.

Machine-scored is not exclusive to Reading and Listening — Build a Sentence is machine-scored too. This says nothing about how Reach120 scores your practice.

How to use this hub

  1. 1Read the specification page once so you know the shape of the section you are preparing for.
  2. 2Pick the single task type you are weakest at and work only that until the errors stop repeating.
  3. 3Move to mixed practice in the drill, where the item type changes without warning.
  4. 4Take a full mock only when mixed practice is stable — a mock taken early measures your pacing, not your reading.

Reading: common questions

Is TOEFL Reading practice free on Reach120?
Yes. Reading and Listening practice is uncapped and needs no account to start. The daily free-tier limits apply to AI-scored Writing and Speaking attempts, because those cost money to grade.
How many Reading questions are on the 2026 TOEFL?
The 2026 specification lists the Reading section at 50 items and 35 raw points across three task types, read 2026-07-27. The count includes non-scored items, the blueprint is subject to minor revision until launch, and the section is adaptive — so an individual sitting has no fixed number.
How is the Reading section adaptive?
The specification describes a two-stage design: a router stage estimated at 18–21 minutes followed by a 9 minute module. Reading prints a single module length for both routes, unlike Listening, which prints two.
Do the practice questions come with answers?
Every published passage on these pages carries its keyed answer and an explanation for each option, visible on the page rather than behind a click or an email form.
