ETS publishes the lower bound of each total range (114+, 107+, 95+ and so on) and the CEFR and IELTS pairings. The upper bound in the second column is arithmetic on those published bounds — the next band’s lower bound minus one — and is shown so the range reads as a range. Two bands, 3 and 1, have no IELTS row in ETS’s table; we leave them empty rather than interpolate.

Section band scores: the previous 0–30 ranges behind each band
Each section — Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking — reports its own band score on the same 1–6 scale, so there is no separate arithmetic to do per section. The table below gives the previous 0–30 range each band stands for, and those ranges differ by section rather than sharing one conversion.

The four sections do not convert identically: 24 in Reading is a 5 while 24 in Speaking is a 4.5. That is ETS’s table, not a rounding choice of ours.

How the overall score is worked out
“The overall score will be the average of all four sections, rounded to the nearest half band (for example, if the average of your section scores is 5.25, you will receive an overall score of 5.5).”

Two consequences worth knowing. A half-point average always rounds up, so 5.25 reports as 5.5. And because the four sections are averaged rather than added, a weak section costs a quarter of a band per whole band it falls behind — not the fifteen or twenty points it used to cost on the 0–120 scale.

- What is a TOEFL band score?
- It is the 1–6 number, in half-point increments, that ETS reports for each of the four sections and for the overall score on tests taken on or after January 21, 2026. This page is a TOEFL band score calculator in both directions: enter bands and read the previous 0–120 comparison, or enter old-scale numbers and read the bands.
- What score scale does the TOEFL test use in 2026?
- For tests taken on or after January 21, 2026, official TOEFL iBT score reports use a 1–6 scale in half-point increments, for each of the four sections and for the overall score.
- How is the overall 1–6 score calculated?
- ETS states that the overall score is the average of all four sections, rounded to the nearest half band — its own example is that an average of 5.25 is reported as 5.5. This calculator applies exactly that rule.
- Do I still receive a 0–120 score?
- For a two-year transition period after January 2026, ETS states that reports also include a comparable overall score on the 0–120 scale, representing the midpoint of the corresponding total range. The 1–6 scale is the primary, official one.
- What is a TOEFL 5 on the old 0–120 scale?
- ETS publishes 95+ for band 5, and 107+ for the band above it, so band 5 corresponds to roughly 95–106 on the previous scale. The exact comparable number printed on a report is the midpoint of that range.
- What is a TOEFL 100 on the new scale?
- A total of 100 on the previous scale falls inside the 95–106 range, which is band 5. ETS separately recommends that an institution currently listing a 100 requirement move to a 1–6 requirement of 5.
- Which CEFR level matches each band?
- ETS aligns 6 with C2, 5 and 5.5 with C1, 4 and 4.5 with B2, 3 and 3.5 with B1, 2 and 2.5 with A2, and 1 and 1.5 with A1. The same numeric value carries the same CEFR level for every section and for the overall score.
- What IELTS score is comparable to a TOEFL band?
- In ETS’s published comparison, IELTS 7.0 pairs with TOEFL total 5, IELTS 7.5 with 5.5, and IELTS 8.0 to 9.0 with 6. ETS publishes no IELTS pairing for TOEFL total 3 or 1, so this page leaves those blank rather than estimating them.
- Is the 0–120 number on my report an exact conversion?
- No. ETS describes it as a comparable overall score representing the midpoint of the corresponding total range, so it is a single point standing in for a range — not a re-scored result on the old scale.
- Do all four sections convert the same way?
- No. The published ranges differ by section: 24 in Reading maps to band 5, while 24 in Speaking maps to 4.5. Use the section table on this page rather than one shared conversion.
- When does the 0–120 estimate stop appearing on score reports?
- ETS describes it as a two-year transition period after January 2026, which places the end of dual reporting around January 2028. Confirm current practice on the ETS page before relying on it for an application deadline.
- My university still lists a 0–120 requirement. Do I need to convert anything?
- ETS states that a score report includes both the 1–6 scores and a comparable 0–120 total estimate, so there is nothing for you to calculate, and it advises contacting the institution directly to confirm its current requirement.
- Does this calculator give me an official score?
- No. It converts numbers you type between published scales. Official scores are issued only by ETS, and no practice platform — including this one — can issue or predict one.
- Can I use it to convert a practice score?
- You can convert any number you have, but treat the result the way you treat the input: a practice score converted between scales is still a practice estimate, not an official result.
- What percentile is my band?
- ETS has not published percentile tables for the 1–6 scale. Any percentile figure you find for the new bands today is somebody’s estimate, and this page will not print one until ETS publishes the data.
- Does the calculator need an account?
