A previous TOEFL total of 80: the 1–6 band it compares to

Written by the Reach120 research teamReviewed
A total of 80 on the previous 0–120 scale sits inside the range ETS publishes for band 4, which ETS aligns with CEFR B2. Going the other way, ETS publishes band 4 as 72+ on that retired scale.

How these figures were arrived at

The band comes from ETS's own comparison table in ETS — TOEFL iBT score scale update (for institutions): 72+ on the previous 0–120 scale is band 4. ETS publishes the LOWER bound of each band only, so the upper bound of 85 is arithmetic on the next band's published bound and is marked as derived above, as is the 79 midpoint — ETS states a transition-period report shows "the midpoint of the corresponding total range", and the report itself is the authority on the exact figure. Per-section 0–30 ranges are transcribed from the same page. This is a comparison ETS published in one direction; it does not recover an exact previous score from a band, and no figure here is an official score.
