FAQ

TOEFL writing practice, answered

From January 21, 2026 the Writing section has three task types: Build a Sentence (arrange 6-12 words, about 6 minutes), Write an Email (about 7 minutes, 0-5 rubric, no set ETS word count), and Academic Discussion (about 10 minutes, 0-5 rubric, at least 100 words). The old independent essay format is gone.

Start with a full pass of all three to find your weakest task, then spend most of your sessions there. Build a Sentence rewards grammar drilling; the email and discussion tasks reward timed writing plus feedback review.

No. Official scores come only from ETS; Reach120 shows a practice estimate. Its criteria reference the publicly available task and rubric descriptions for the 2026 format. How closely the estimate matches official scoring has not been measured, so we do not claim it does — the feedback names the issues it found in your response and tracks them over time.

Reading and Listening practice, sample answers, practice topics, and all blog guides are free. Unlimited AI-scored Writing and Speaking practice needs a paid plan: $29 every month or $59 every three months, cancel any time — each renews automatically until you cancel. Pricing is shown on this page, and there is no signup wall to see it.

Yes. The TOEFL Writing section changed on January 21, 2026 to three task types: Build a Sentence, Write an Email, and Academic Discussion. Reach120 practice follows the official ETS task descriptions for that format. Our scores are practice estimates, never official results.
