How it works

How TOEFL writing practice works

1

Pick a task

Choose Build a Sentence, Write an Email, or Academic Discussion, or take them in test order.

2

Practice under the real timer

Each task uses the 2026 time limits plus Reach120 word targets, so pacing becomes second nature.

3

Get scored feedback

Sentences are checked instantly; emails and discussion posts get a 0-5 rubric score with mistake highlights.

4

Track your progress

Score history shows which task is holding you back so you know where to spend your next session.

Where are the TOEFL Writing questions and essay prompts?

Below, task by task. The TOEFL writing questions on this page are the three 2026 tasks — Build a Sentence, Write an Email and Academic Discussion — each with its guide, its worked examples and its numbered bank.

The TOEFL essay prompts most people are looking for are the Academic Discussion boards and the Write an Email briefs; the old independent essay is not part of the 2026 format.

Every bank on this page is readable without an account.

The Writing section has three task types. Each one below has a complete guide explaining how it is scored and what a strong response does, a practice page with worked examples, and a numbered question bank printed in full — all readable without an account.

FAQ

TOEFL writing practice, answered

From January 21, 2026 the Writing section has three task types: Build a Sentence (arrange 6-12 words, about 6 minutes), Write an Email (about 7 minutes, 0-5 rubric, no set ETS word count), and Academic Discussion (about 10 minutes, 0-5 rubric, at least 100 words). The old independent essay format is gone.

Start with a full pass of all three to find your weakest task, then spend most of your sessions there. Build a Sentence rewards grammar drilling; the email and discussion tasks reward timed writing plus feedback review.

No. Official scores come only from ETS; Reach120 shows a practice estimate. Its criteria reference the publicly available task and rubric descriptions for the 2026 format. How closely the estimate matches official scoring has not been measured, so we do not claim it does — the feedback names the issues it found in your response and tracks them over time.

Reading and Listening practice, sample answers, practice topics, and all blog guides are free. Unlimited AI-scored Writing and Speaking practice needs a paid plan: $7.49 every week or $48 every three months, cancel any time — each renews automatically until you cancel. AI scoring carries a fair-use limit of 300 actions a month — far more than typical use. Pricing is shown on this page, and there is no signup wall to see it.

Yes. The TOEFL Writing section changed on January 21, 2026 to three task types: Build a Sentence, Write an Email, and Academic Discussion. Reach120 practice follows the 2026 task descriptions ETS publishes. Our scores are practice estimates, never official results.
