An overall 5 aligns with CEFR C1 and corresponds to 95–106 on the previous 0–120 scale. ETS pairs it with IELTS 7.0.

Is TOEFL 5.0 equal to IELTS 7.0 or 7.5? The disagreement, resolved
Search for a TOEFL-to-IELTS conversion and you will find both answers: some pages pair a TOEFL total of 5.0 with IELTS 7.0, others with IELTS 7.5. Almost none of them say which table they are using, which is the actual source of the disagreement.
ETS’s own comparison table, published for the 1–6 scale that took effect January 21, 2026, pairs each band with exactly one IELTS score — it does not treat 5.0 as a range. In that table, TOEFL 5.0 pairs with IELTS 7.0, and TOEFL 5.5 — half a band higher, not the same band — pairs with IELTS 7.5. A page that shows 5.0 as 7.5 has either merged those two rows or is carrying forward an older comparison built for a different scale, without saying so.
This converter uses ETS’s new-scale table exclusively, transcribed row for row with nothing interpolated. Where ETS publishes no pairing at all — TOEFL total 3 and total 1 have none — the tool says so instead of estimating one.

The full table: TOEFL band, previous total, CEFR and IELTS
| Band (1–6) | Previous total (0–120) | ETS publishes | CEFR | IELTS overall |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 114–120 | 114+ | C2 | 8.0–9.0 |
| 5.5 | 107–113 | 107+ | C1 | 7.5 |
| 5 | 95–106 | 95+ | C1 | 7.0 |
| 4.5 | 86–94 | 86+ | B2 | 6.5 |
| 4 | 72–85 | 72+ | B2 | 6.0 |
| 3.5 | 58–71 | 58+ | B1 | 5.5 |
| 3 | 44–57 | 44+ | B1 | not published |
| 2.5 | 34–43 | 34+ | A2 | 5.0 |
| 2 | 24–33 | 24+ | A2 | 4.5 |
| 1.5 | 12–23 | 12+ | A1 | 4.0 |
| 1 | 0–11 | 0+ | A1 | not published |
ETS publishes the lower bound of each total range (114+, 107+, 95+ and so on) and the CEFR and IELTS pairings. The upper bound in the second column is arithmetic on those published bounds — the next band’s lower bound minus one — and is shown so the range reads as a range. Two bands, 3 and 1, have no IELTS row in ETS’s table; we leave them empty rather than interpolate.

Common questions
- Is TOEFL 5.0 the same as IELTS 7.0 or IELTS 7.5?
- ETS’s own published table pairs TOEFL total 5 with IELTS 7.0 only, and TOEFL total 5.5 — half a band higher — with IELTS 7.5. If you see 5.0 listed elsewhere as IELTS 7.5, that source is not using ETS’s new-scale concordance table; this page prints that table exclusively, with its source and read date below.
- Where does ETS publish the TOEFL–IELTS comparison?
- On its TOEFL iBT score scale update page for institutions, which lists a 1–6 TOEFL band beside the IELTS overall band ETS considers comparable. This tool and its table are transcribed from that page.
- Does every TOEFL band have an IELTS pairing?
- No. ETS publishes no IELTS pairing for TOEFL total 3 or total 1, so this tool reports nothing for those bands rather than estimating one.
- Can I convert from IELTS to TOEFL as well as TOEFL to IELTS?
- Yes. Switch to the IELTS overall tab and pick your IELTS score; the tool looks up the TOEFL band ETS pairs with it from the same table, in the other direction.
- What about PTE Academic or Duolingo English Test?
- ETS has not published a PTE or Duolingo comparison table in the source this tool draws from, so this converter does not include them. We are not adding an estimated pairing in their place — that would be inventing a number ETS has not published.
- Is this an official score conversion?
- No. It converts a number you type between two published comparison tables. Official TOEFL scores are issued only by ETS, and IELTS scores only by the British Council, IDP or Cambridge, depending on where you sit the test.
- Does the converter need an account?
- No. It is free, needs no signup, and runs entirely in your browser — nothing you type is sent anywhere.
