How to Choose a TOEFL Writing Tool in 2026 (Honest Comparison Guide)

The TOEFL Writing section changed on January 21, 2026: three short tasks (Build a Sentence, Write an Email, Academic Discussion) replaced the old essay format. Most comparison articles you will find — including an earlier version of this one — were written with star ratings, review counts, and feature tables that nobody can actually verify. This rewrite takes the opposite approach.

Why this guide exists

A note on honesty: the previous version of this article claimed an unlimited free tier, quoted user ratings, and included a testimonial we could not verify. The 10-minute evaluation checklist

Open any tool's site and check these six things before paying:

1. 2026 task coverage. Does it practice Build a Sentence, Write an Email, and Academic Discussion — by name? If the writing section shows a reading passage plus lecture (Integrated) or a 30-minute essay, the content predates the current test.
2. Real constraints. Timed practice at roughly 6 / 7 / 10 minutes. On length, check the tool tells the truth: ETS publishes no word-count requirement for Write an Email, and Academic Discussion needs at least 100 words with no published maximum — ranges like 80-120 or 100-150 words are optional pacing targets, not test rules. Untimed, unlimited-length practice still builds the wrong habits.
3. Feedback depth. Ask for a sample report before paying. A useful report scores the 0-5 rubric by dimension, quotes your own sentences, and shows rewrites — not just "Grammar: 7/10."
4. Score honesty. Official reports (since January 21, 2026) show a 1-6 section band in half-point increments; any 0-30 number a tool displays should be labeled an estimate on the prior scale. Official scores come only from ETS. Walk away from guaranteed score gains.
5. Pricing transparency. The price, billing period, and what is free versus paid should be findable in under a minute. Vague "start free" buttons that hide a paywall behind an upload are a bad sign.
6. Update evidence. Look for content dated after January 2026 that names the new tasks. A blog still teaching "TOEFL essay templates" as current advice tells you how maintained the product is.
