TOEFL writing tips for South Korea students
Korean TOEFL students often have strong test discipline, but writing scores can suffer when the response sounds template-heavy or the opinion appears too late.
What this guide practises: natural tone. That is Reach120’s editorial focus for South Korea, not a measurement of anything.
What ETS publishes about testing in South Korea
Each row below is quoted from a public ETS page, with the URL and the date Reach120 read it. Reach120 measures none of this and estimates none of it.
What it costs to register
ETS sets the registration fee by testing location and publishes it on its own page: “Select your testing location to view the registration fee.” Reach120 does not republish the figure — get it from ETS, where it is current.
ETS, TOEFL iBT Test Fees. Read 2026-08-12. Note: TOEFL iBT Prices exclude VAT or other applicable taxes, except for EU countries.
- A refund window the rest of the world does not get
7 days after you register
“If you are taking the test in Korea, you have 7 days after you register to receive a full refund:”
ETS, TOEFL iBT Information Bulletin. Read 2026-08-12. ETS calls this location “Korea”, not “South Korea”.
Everywhere else the Bulletin gives 50% back if you cancel by the 4-day deadline. The Korea table then falls to that 50% from day 8 until 4 days before the test, and to no refund inside 3 days.
- The one place a digital ID is not automatically refused
some digital IDs are permitted
“except in the Republic of Korea, where some digital IDs are permitted”
ETS, Identification (ID) Requirements for the TOEFL iBT Test. Read 2026-08-12. ETS calls this location “Republic of Korea”, not “South Korea”.
ETS does not say WHICH digital IDs in the part of the page that is readable without running its script. Reach120 did not read the per-country detail behind that selector, so treat this as "ask ETS", not as permission.

Nothing else on this page is a fact about testing in South Korea. The rest is Reach120’s practice advice, and no test-taker count or national average score appears anywhere on it, because Reach120 does not measure either.
For students preparing around school exams, applications, and language-center schedules, short feedback cycles are more useful than memorizing another model essay.
The fastest path is not a larger prompt list. It is a repeatable loop: write under time pressure, get rubric-specific feedback, rewrite one weak section, and track whether the same mistakes appear less often.

Common mistakes for South Korea test takers
Common patterns include template-like transitions, article errors, and examples that repeat the topic instead of proving the claim.
- Template transitions that make the response sound mechanical
- Article and plural noun errors
- Examples that do not explain why the opinion is stronger

A realistic weekly TOEFL writing plan
Write one timed response, then replace three template phrases with direct transitions that show cause, contrast, or result.
After each rewrite, save the before-and-after version. If your thesis appears earlier, your examples become more specific, and your repeated grammar mistakes decrease, the practice is working.
Frequently asked questions
What should Korean students focus on first?
Start with sentence control, clear topic sentences, and one specific example per body paragraph.
Do country-specific topics help?
Yes. Familiar topics reduce idea-generation time, which leaves more attention for organization, grammar, and TOEFL timing.
How do I know whether my TOEFL writing is improving?
Track whether the same errors repeat less often and whether your feedback shows stronger task completion across multiple timed responses.
