Retired scale, sourced
The TOEFL 0-30 score scale is retired. Here is the current scale.
Before January 21, 2026, TOEFL iBT scored each of its four sections — Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing — on a 0-30 scale, summed to a 0-120 total. As of January 21, 2026, official score reports use a 1-6 scale in half-band increments instead. A 0-120 comparable estimate still appears alongside it during a transition period through January 2028, but it is no longer the primary scale.
What ETS states
- ETS previously reported TOEFL iBT scores as "Reading (0-30) Listening (0-30) Speaking (0-30) Writing (0-30) Total (0-120)." As of January 21, 2026, TOEFL iBT score reports feature a new 1-6 scale. ETS: Understanding Your Scores, accessed August 6, 2026.
What replaced it
Reach120 interprets — our read connecting the retired task to the current 2026 format, built on the sourced fact above, never an ETS statement.
Reach120 interprets — the 0-30 figure searchers remember was always a per-section raw-to-scaled score under the pre-2026 test, not a Writing-specific number. The current Writing section itself is built from 20 maximum raw points across its three tasks, which ETS reports through the 1-6 scale rather than as a 0-30 Writing sub-score.
Frequently asked
Does TOEFL iBT still score sections on a 0-30 scale?
No. As of January 21, 2026, official TOEFL iBT score reports use a 1-6 scale in half-band increments. Before that date, ETS reported each of the four sections on a 0-30 scale, summed to a 0-120 total.
What is the new TOEFL score scale?
A 1-6 scale in half-band increments, for tests taken on or after January 21, 2026. During a transition period through January 2028, reports also include a comparable overall estimate on the previous 0-120 scale, but the 1-6 scale is the primary, official one.
Is 0-30 still the TOEFL Writing section score?
No. The pre-2026 0-30 figure was a per-section raw-to-scaled score across all four sections, not a Writing-specific number. The current Writing section scores 20 maximum raw points across its three tasks, reported through the 1-6 scale.
