Should you retake the TOEFL®?
Retake decision tool
Where you stand
You are 1 of a band short: 4 against a requirement of 5.
The gap is 1 of a band
A gap of more than half a band means the average of all four sections has to move meaningfully. That is a preparation problem rather than a test-day-variance problem, and sitting the same test again unchanged is unlikely to close it.
You have not said how uneven your sections are
Worth resolving, because it changes the answer more than anything else here. A gap concentrated in one weak section is a different problem from one spread evenly across four — the first is addressable, the second is slower.
There is time before your deadline
So the constraint is preparation rather than the calendar. Use it: a retake booked for next week and a retake booked for two months from now are different decisions.
Your preparation would be different next time
That is the one honest reason to expect a different result. What matters is that the change is specific — a named weak section worked on with scored feedback, not simply more hours.
What ETS allows
ETS states you can retake the TOEFL iBT as often as you'd like. ETS states there is no limit on how many times you may retake the test, but the minimum waiting period between two sittings is published in the TOEFL iBT Information Bulletin rather than on the pages checked here. Confirm it there before you book a second date — this tool will not compute an earliest-retake date it cannot source.
This tool does not estimate what you would score on a second attempt, and no tool can. A retake’s result depends on what changes between now and then — nothing about your first score predicts the second on its own.

The question worth asking before “should I retake?”
Check the requirement itself first. Three things go wrong here more often than a genuinely short score. The requirement may be published on the 0–120 scale and not yet updated for the 1–6 bands, in which case the number you are comparing against is not the number they now want. There may be a per-section minimum you have met while missing the overall, or vice versa. And some institutions accept a score they do not advertise, or make conditional offers. All three are cheaper to check than a retake is to sit.

- How much will my score go up if I retake?
- This tool does not estimate what you would score on a second attempt, and no tool can. A retake’s result depends on what changes between now and then — nothing about your first score predicts the second on its own.
- Do institutions see that I took the test more than once?
- That depends on which scores you send and on the institution’s own policy, not on anything this tool can determine. Check what the institution asks for — some want every score, some take the highest, and some take the most recent.
- Is it worth retaking for half a band?
- It depends on where the half band would come from. Because the overall band is the average of four sections, half a band is a quarter-band improvement across all four, or one whole band in a single section. If you have one clearly weak section and time to work on it, that is a tractable target. If your four sections are already even, it is a slower project than it looks.
