The three numbers on a 2026 report, and what each one is

The 1–6 band

Your actual score. ETS states: “As of January 21, 2026, TOEFL iBT score reports feature a new 1 – 6 scale, in half point increments, with a more intuitive alignment to the Common European Framework of References for Language (CEFR).”

The 0–120 figure beside it

A comparison, not your score. ETS states: “For a two-year transition period after January 2026, you will also receive a comparable overall score on the 0 – 120 scale, representing the midpoint of the corresponding total range.” It exists so institutions with old requirements can still read your report, and it stops being shown when the transition period ends.

The CEFR level

A description of proficiency shared across European language frameworks, aligned by ETS to each band. Useful where an institution states a CEFR requirement rather than a test-specific one.

Why averaging changes what to work on

ETS states: “The overall score will be the average of all four sections, rounded to the nearest half band (for example, if the average of your section scores is 5.25, you will receive an overall score of 5.5).” Two consequences follow. A weak section now costs a quarter of a band per whole band it falls behind, not the fifteen or twenty points it cost on the 0–120 scale — so a single weak section is less catastrophic than it used to be, but also harder to fix by brute force elsewhere. And because the average rounds to the nearest half band, small gains often show no change at all until they cross a rounding boundary, at which point the band moves all at once.

Common questions

Why does my score report show both a band and a 0–120 number?

Because of the transition after the January 2026 scale change. ETS states: “For a two-year transition period after January 2026, you will also receive a comparable overall score on the 0 – 120 scale, representing the midpoint of the corresponding total range.” The band is your score; the 0–120 figure is a comparison for institutions whose requirements still use the old scale.

How is the overall band calculated?

ETS states: “The overall score will be the average of all four sections, rounded to the nearest half band (for example, if the average of your section scores is 5.25, you will receive an overall score of 5.5).” So the overall is a mean of the four sections, not a total — one band gained in one section is a quarter of a band overall.

Is the /30 number I remember still used?

Not on current reports. Section scores were reported on 0–30 scales before 21 January 2026; since then sections are reported on the 1–6 band scale like the overall. Where you see a 0–30 range quoted against a band, it is a comparison with the old scale rather than a current score.

Which section should I work on first?

Usually the lowest, because the overall is an average — but check whether the institution sets a minimum for any single section. A section minimum can make a higher section the binding constraint even when it is not your weakest.

Does this tool give me a score?

This reads a score report you already have. It is not a score, an estimate of one, or a prediction — the numbers you enter are yours, and everything derived from them comes from ETS’s published tables.
