The longest recordings in the Listening section, and the ones that punish a wandering attention. This page explains what the question types want, works a full lecture with its transcript, and shows why function questions are lost in a different way than detail questions.

What Listen to an Academic Talk asks you to do

You hear a talk on an academic subject — usually one instructor developing a single idea with examples. Subject knowledge is never required: everything the questions need is in the recording. What is required is following an argument across minutes rather than sentences.

What ETS states

  • The 2026 specification lists the Listening section at 47 items and 35 raw points, with task types Listen and Choose a Response, Listen to a Conversation, Listen to an Announcement, and Listen to an Academic Talk.

    These are published blueprint values, which the specification states are subject to minor revisions until the official launch. The item count includes non-scored items, so items do not equal raw points — the specification lists a maximum of 1 point per scored item.

  • The specification lists an estimated Listening time of an 18 minute router plus a second-stage module of 7 minutes (lower) or 11 minutes (upper).

    The times are estimated, and the two module lengths are discrete listed values — not a sliding 7-to-11-minute range.

  • Listening items are machine-scored selected responses, evaluated by rule-based algorithms per the specification’s item-type notes.

    Machine-scored is not exclusive to Reading and Listening — Build a Sentence is machine-scored too. This says nothing about how Reach120 scores your practice.

What actually decides the item

A function question — "why does the professor mention X" — is not asking what X is. It is asking what the sentence BEFORE X was claiming. In the worked lecture, the slab of meat is mentioned to illustrate "sound didn’t have to be realistic, it had to be convincing". Anyone who answers from the example itself picks a true statement about meat and loses the item.

Noting sentences versus noting structure

Weaker

You transcribe as much as you can: silent films, pianist, noisy cameras, booths, footsteps, gloves, meat. Then a question asks why the meat was mentioned and the notes do not say.

Stronger

You note the shape: claim (music told the audience how to feel) → surprise (sound cameras were noisy, so the camera froze) → claim (effects are built, not recorded) → examples (gloves, meat) → conclusion (natural sound is constructed).

The second version answers all three worked questions. The first answers only the detail one, which is the cheapest of the three.

Adding sound to early films

Let’s think about early cinema, back when films had no recorded soundtrack. We call them silent films, but the theaters were rarely silent. A live musician, often a pianist, sat below the screen and played along with the action, speeding up during a chase, slowing down for a sad scene. The music told the audience how to feel. When recorded sound finally arrived, it changed filmmaking in ways nobody expected. Here’s the first surprise: early sound cameras were noisy, so they had to be sealed inside soundproof booths. That made the camera almost impossible to move, and for a while films actually became more static than they’d been in the silent era. It took engineers a few years to quiet the equipment and free the camera again. Now let me flag something about sound design specifically. Filmmakers realized that sound didn’t have to be realistic — it had to be convincing. The footsteps you hear in a movie might be someone slapping gloves on a table; a punch might be a fist hitting a slab of meat. Sound artists build these effects deliberately, because a real recording often sounds thin and unconvincing. So the soundtrack you experience as natural is, in fact, carefully constructed — an illusion designed to feel real.

      It is a fabricated effect standing in for a punch, not a recording of one.

      The example is evidence that sound design is deliberate work, which is the opposite claim.

      Camera noise is an earlier, separate point. Function questions are lost by attaching the example to the wrong section.

How this task type is scored

Every item on this task type is a selected response with one keyed answer, so an attempt is either right or wrong and there is no rubric to argue with. What the practice is worth is the reason a distractor pulled you, which is why every option above publishes why it was written rather than only which one is correct.

  • For TOEFL tests taken on or after January 21, 2026, official score reports use a 1–6 scale in half-band increments.

How to practice it without wasting the material

  1. 1Note the structure, not the sentences: claim, evidence, qualification, aside. A detail is easier to recover from a structure than from a wall of text.
  2. 2Answer first, then read the transcript and find the sentence the key rests on. For function questions, find the sentence BEFORE the example — that is where the answer lives.
  3. 3If you lose the thread halfway, write down where. The recovery point is more useful information than the score on the item.
  4. 4Practice on subjects you know nothing about on purpose. A talk on seed banking or early film sound is testing listening, and familiar material lets you answer from memory instead.

How long is an academic talk?
ETS does not publish a per-recording length. Each Reach120 practice recording prints its own duration on the drill page, so the pacing figure is measured rather than assumed.
Do I need background knowledge in the subject?
No. The questions are answerable from the recording alone. The worked lecture on this page is about early film sound, and every keyed answer is a sentence the professor says out loud.
Is this the same as the old TOEFL lecture questions?
The 2026 specification names this task type Listen to an Academic Talk. The listening skill overlaps with pre-2026 lecture practice, but the section around it — adaptive, shorter, differently scored — does not.
