Let's think about early cinema, back when films had no recorded soundtrack. We call them silent films, but the theaters were rarely silent. A live musician, often a pianist, sat below the screen and played along with the action, speeding up during a chase, slowing down for a sad scene. The music told the audience how to feel. That's a seed bank, and today I want to explain why such places matter more than they might first appear. Here's the problem they address. What Listen to an Academic Talk asks you to do

  • A recorded talk on an academic subject, usually one instructor developing a single idea with examples.
  • Questions ask about the main idea, supporting detail, the function of a passage, and what the speaker implies.
  • Subject knowledge is never required — everything the questions need is in the recording.

What ETS states

  • The 2026 specification lists the Listening section at 47 items and 35 raw points, with task types Listen and Choose a Response, Listen to a Conversation, Listen to an Announcement, and Listen to an Academic Talk.

    These are published blueprint values, which the specification states are subject to minor revisions until the official launch. The item count includes non-scored items, so items do not equal raw points — the specification lists a maximum of 1 point per scored item.

  • The specification lists an estimated Listening time of an 18 minute router plus a second-stage module of 7 minutes (lower) or 11 minutes (upper).

    The times are estimated, and the two module lengths are discrete listed values — not a sliding 7-to-11-minute range.

  • Listening items are machine-scored selected responses, evaluated by rule-based algorithms per the specification’s item-type notes.

What the task actually measures

  • Whether you followed an argument across minutes rather than sentences.

Every item on this task type is a selected response with one keyed answer, so a practice attempt is either right or wrong and there is no rubric to argue with. What the practice is worth is the reason a distractor pulled you — which is why every question below publishes why the key is right and why each wrong option looks right.

How to practice it without wasting the material

  1. 1Note the structure, not the sentences: claim, evidence, qualification, aside. Detail questions are easier to recover from a structure than from a wall of notes.
  2. 2Answer first, then read the transcript and find the sentence the key rests on.
  3. 3If you lose the thread halfway, note where. The recovery point is more useful information than the score on the item.

How long is a TOEFL academic talk?
ETS does not publish a per-recording length. Each Reach120 practice recording on this page prints its own duration, so the pacing figure you practice against is measured rather than assumed.
Do I need background knowledge in the subject?
No. The questions are answerable from the recording alone. A talk on seed banking or early film sound is testing listening, not the subject.
Is this the same as the old TOEFL lecture questions?
The 2026 specification names this task type Listen to an Academic Talk. The skill overlaps with pre-2026 lecture practice, but the section around it — adaptive, shorter, differently scored — does not.
