The true void, stated plainly

TOEFL® score percentiles (2026 format): what ETS has not published

Written by the Reach120 research teamReviewed

ETS has published no percentile ranks under the 1–6 score scale that took effect January 21, 2026. Any page claiming a TOEFL band corresponds to a specific percentile of test takers is stating a number nobody has sourced — including us. This page explains why, and what we offer instead.

Why no percentile appears below

A percentile requires a real distribution of test-taker scores. ETS has not published one for the 1–6 scale, and Reach120 does not operate the exam, so we hold no test-taker population data either — only practice-attempt data from people using this site, which is a different population and would misrepresent an ETS percentile if presented as one. Publishing an invented number to fill this SERP gap would be exactly the fabrication this whole platform is built to refuse.

What is sourced instead: the CEFR level per band

ETS does publish a CEFR alignment for every band — a proficiency-level description, not a percentile, but the closest sourced signal to "how strong is this score" that exists today.

First to update, not first to guess

The day ETS publishes percentile data for the 1–6 scale, this page updates with the sourced numbers and a read date. Until then, a stated void is the honest answer to this query.

Common questions

What percentile is a TOEFL band 5.0?
ETS has published no percentile ranks under the 1–6 scale (2026 format), so there is no sourced answer to this question yet — from us or from anyone who has not simply invented one.
Did ETS publish percentiles under the old 0–120 scale?
ETS has historically published score-distribution reports for the previous scale in some years. Those reports do not state 1–6 percentiles, and mapping an old-scale percentile onto a band would require assuming the population distribution has not shifted with the new test — an assumption we are not willing to publish as fact.
Will this page ever show a percentile number?
Yes, as soon as ETS publishes one, sourced with its own URL and read date. Until then this page states the void rather than filling it with an invented figure.
