TOEFL® score meanings: every band, 1.0–6.0

Written by the Reach120 research teamReviewed

Since January 21, 2026, TOEFL score reports use eleven half bands from 1.0 to 6.0. Each page below states what one band means — its CEFR level and the previous 0–120 comparison — with nothing invented. For the scale itself, read the full score-scale explainer.

Common questions

What does a TOEFL band mean?
Each 1–6 band is ETS's official score-report unit since January 21, 2026. ETS aligns each band to a CEFR level and, during the transition through January 2028, a comparable previous 0–120 range.
Which band should I aim for?
That depends entirely on the requirement your target institution currently publishes — this hub explains what each band IS, not what any specific program requires. Check the institution's own current page.
