MIT: the TOEFL® scores it publishes

On the day we read it, this page stated only a 0–120 requirement. Reports have used 1–6 bands since 21 January 2026, so ask the office which band it now expects rather than converting the number yourself.

Every number below is followed by the sentence it was read from, the page it is on, and the day we read it. Nothing on this page is converted, averaged, or filled in from another source — where MIT publishes no number, this page publishes none either.

Office of Graduate Education (GradAdmissions)

  • Legacy 0–120 scale — tests taken before 21 Jan 2026

GradAdmissions recommendation — departments set their own minimums

    Recommended, not a minimum

    Overall
    100
GradAdmissions recommends a minimum score of at least 100, however each department has its own minimum score requirement for TOEFL.

Also on that page

  • Department minimum score requirements supersede GradAdmissions recommended minimum score.

Reach120: So the number above is the floor of a recommendation, not of an admission. The requirement that binds you is your department’s, on your department’s page.

Everything above is MIT Office of Graduate Education’s own page, read 2026-08-12. Requirements change without notice — read it yourself before you book a test.

Before you use these numbers

  • A university-level minimum is a floor, not an offer. Several of the pages in this dataset say in their own words that individual programmes require more.
  • Which row applies to you depends on your test date, not on today’s date. Scores on the old scale stay valid for two years, so both rows can be live at once.
  • Admissions pages change without notice and this one is a copy. The link beside each quote is the thing that decides your application.
